I recently wrote a journal entry [link] about my trying to come up with more complex designs for the clothing of the main cast in Rain. Afterward, I began doing something I probably should have done about two and half years ago BEFORE starting to draw and post the comic: make character sheets that portray a variety of costumes for each character.
And that's what you see here. Rain wasn't one of the problem characters; actually, I LIKE her outfits. But if I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this for everyone. And I may as well start with the main character to ease myself into things. This is by no means everything she's ever worn and ever will wear, but it does give a pretty good idea of what her style is.
Rain's style is quite simple, actually, but she easily has some of the most complex outfits in the story. It's worth noting, that she pretty much never wears pants. Skirts or dresses will always be her first choice (regardless of weather). And 90% of the time, she's got neckgear, usually in the form of a collar (though we may see it replaced for scarves during the Winter segments of the story). Incidentally, she wears a lot of black, but not really in a "goth way". In most cases, it goes with something else that's lighter.
Rain also does pretty much everything with her hair. Well, the back of it anyway. She seldom strays from the one-covered eye look in front. But her hair has been tied back (or not) in a number of ways throughout the comic. I'd be happy to explore more as things go if there's any other practical styles I can go with it. Because, considering the front is pretty much always the same (unless otherwise noted) she always remains recognizable, no matter what happens to the back.
Anyway, that's it for now, but by all means: ask questions, make suggestions, whatever. I'm happy to hear. I'll be continuing to do one for each of the main kids (probably Gavin next, because I feel like I got the most support for ideas for him when I asked). If all goes well, I'll try to post one of these every day a normal page doesn't go up until I cover everyone.
I thought about a hairstyle Rain could use, but then I realized it would require her to pull her hair back away from her eye, and that would take away her iconic hairstyle. Maybe Maria or Chanel... Or Emily. She has long hair. There.
It's difficult to describe accurately, but I'll try. It's like where the hair at the back is loose, but the hair on top and sides are pulled back into a ponytail. You know what I'm talking about? I've seen it a thousand times and can picture it in my mind effortlessly, but I can't really describe it that well and have no clue if there's an official name for it or whatever. Heck, you might've used it already. I dunno.
Oh! I think I know what you're talking about... I'm struggling to find a reference to confirm it though (because I don't know what that's called either). It's kind of like hairstyle #1 and #4 (above) combined though, right?
I asked somebody who was wearing her hair that way. She called it a "half ponytail". Best description I've heard so far. And now that I have that, I get instant results for that on Google Images.
Dang, I didn't even think to use this as a reference. But yeah, 1 and 4 combined. Hard to search for, don't know what it's called. "Half-loose-half-ponytail" is the best I got.
I can't wait to see the one from 313 it looks really cute and really good. I was thinking for the hair you could always try twin tails that should be interesting.
