The first chapter page to not feature Rain… or Gavin, incidentally. Instead, we see Emily Caston, another one of Rain’s classmates and a generally bit-part character up until now.
I was aiming for this chapter to be a little more light and funny than the previous one. Not that nothing important happens, mind you. Quite the contrary, in fact; I mean, there’s always drama, but not all plot and character development requires deadly seriousness.
I would also go so far as to call this the “true start of the story”. Everything up until now has been stage setting. You all know the main characters; now it’s time to start putting them into “situations”. Should be fun. Look forward to it. ^_^
Halloween parties? The entire senior class? Rain freaking out about passing? Maria trying to stop her from hyperventilating? Gavin trying his utmost not to be an idiot? Rudy crashing the party, dressed as something/someone fabulous?
This is fascinating to me. And to be honest its the first title page that kind of gives me no clue of what is going to happen. Especially since a current background character might end up being more important now. And seeing her give out a Halloween party banner gives me a weird idea of where it is going to go. And it will be hilarious, but seeing Emily's past interactions with characters does tell the audience that despite her pretty smile you might have to be careful around her. She does have "suspicions" about Rain afterall.
I can also understand your intention. Rain wouldn't be the same story that so many people love if it was only about the drama of transitioning. Sure its a big part of it, but that isn't all that is going on. We are still people, so wehave perceptions on holidays, videogames, comics, movies, current events, just unable and chaotic episodes that leads no one to see what is going to happen. But at the same time can still be understood and believed given how the characters are written. So even if their is a chapter that doesn't have "how can you possibly do this?" we as the audience will understand that their is a time where we have to move away from that in order to really listen to the story.
As for what you said about the "true start" of the story, I can understand what you mean. If you look through popular titles such as Rorouni Kenshin and Death Note, after the first 3-4 chapters it becomes a different type of monster. At that point the players were introduced and their issues were set. After that its chaos theory. When situations happen and we are left to wonde how, given how they were introduced to us, will react. Its a common formula, but it makes me excited to see where you are going with this. And as far as I can tell, it even renews my love for the story in a way.
Congratulations on making it to this point, and glad to see you back. Hope it turns out the way you wish it too.
oh a Halloween party, oh i can feel a storm of entertainment brewing. your work is erm... excellent, keep it up i do enjoy each page. iamunknownlol <-- don't even try to understand it.
They should play mafia. Just because I've never seen mafia being played anywhere outside of real life before. Seriously, though, this page offers a straightforward introduction. As the image is placed in the first person, it is almost as if the reader is being invited to the party (I accept, but I'm not going to be in costume for five weeks straight). It also draws out one of the minor characters, about whom we know practically nothing. A promising first page indeed!
.....This is going to be an AWESOME chapter.
