You might (or might not) recall from Maria’s first appearance way back on page 8, a little non sequitur where the scene opens just in time for the bewildering punchline, “No way, man. That’s NOT a duck.” I use that one a lot (my DeviantArt watchers can find it at least one more time in my gallery if they look carefully).
Long ago however - dating back to perhaps even my preteen years before I took writing remotely seriously - my strange punchline without a joke was always, “You don’t understand. The sushi is good!” Neither of these make a lick of sense, and your guess is as good as mine as to how it’s funny in context, but it does apparently make Maria out to be one hell of a good storyteller.
Concerning the 5th through 7th panels, it’s worth noting that aside from Rain and Rudy, probably no one was REALLY looking at Maria just then. Or rather, they weren’t actively eavesdropping. Or are they? Seemed like someone was ALWAYS watching back in high school. But that’s not the point. Regardless of whether anyone’s paying attention, Maria - “desperate for her smokescreen” as Rudy puts it - puts on a show to make absolute sure everyone sees they’re “together” again.
It’s pages like this that remind me that I don’t miss high school…
Literal, actual conversation between two of my friends today: "Do you eat sushi a lot?" "Yeah." "Is it good?" "Yeah. Have you not had sushi before?" "No, I mean your sushi."
I wanted to interject so badly (by which I mean, I laughed a little on the inside and though of this page).
Now i wonder what the whole joke was. And of course Maria has to have a boyfriend, active smokescreen. My guess is even though she has a fake relationship with Gavin, she will attempt to get a real relationship with Rain but she will do it in a very haphazard way and it will probably end in some kind of disaster and Maria says that she likes Rain. I think that's more of a wish than a prediction though, i think i will always hope for a Rain and Maria relationship.
This page is just awesome for being random. I'm sure their was a lot of questions from Rain after finding out that her brother is eloping, but I think it was a good idea to begin with a sushi joke. And seeing Maria kind of through herself at her "smiokescreen" is also a good way to definitely put an end to what I like to call the "Reaquainted" arc (being ch. 1-4). Though I'm sure Maria still hold's a slight grudge with Gavin for what he did, I guess knowing Rain is happy makes Maria want to atleast try like Gavin is trying to.
The story you also told about "the sushi is good" really was a good bit of trivia, I love it when writers include stuff like that in their pages. It somehow makes the pages more personal to read. And seeing your input on the idea that you are the center of the universe in Highschool in someway makes me remember why I didn't like Highschool either.
Paneling is a little weird, I thought it would be better to have a long panel with just the entire cast within Maria's perspective as to enhance that paranoia. But the broken up panels tell me that its a more focused oint of view thus enhancing that these are different social circles at maybe different tables. And made what I just said completely pointless. But I already typed my opinion. So do with it what you wish. Again, great addition to the piece.
That probably COULD actually work. But if I had Maria tell that one, I'd actually have to come up with a unique spin on it for her to tell. That's just the way the joke works. ^_^
"No way, man. That's NOT a duck."
Nope, combining the two still doesn't make much sense. Unless someone thought sushi was supposed to be made from ducks.
"Do you eat sushi a lot?"
"Yeah."
"Is it good?"
"Yeah. Have you not had sushi before?"
"No, I mean your sushi."

Man1: Are you eating duck?
Man2: No way, man! That's NOT a duck!
Man1: But I thought duck was the only food you would eat.
Man2: You don't understand. The sushi is good!
or something like that. It makes a lot of sense to me at least
All of this regardless of the fact that it's probably more attention-grabbing with her forgiving him so... exuberantly?
