Leave it to Gavin to mean something nice but still manage to sound like a dick in the process.
To clarify the “mask vs. cute costume” argument: they don’t really make a lot of girly costumes that have masks. Guy costumes get masks, gore and weapons. Girl costumes get sex appeal, glitter and accessories. I mean, there are always exceptions of course, but that is the majority.
Ryan probably grew up being stuck with cliché boy costumes his whole life, like reapers and vampires and devils or something. So Rain is longing for the opportunity to finally be something more feminine, like a princess or a faerie or what have you. You know, something cute. Something ultra girly that she couldn’t have ever gotten away with in her childhood.
Said costumes tend to be exceptionally “showy” though. Rain might want one because they’re decidedly girly, but at the same time, fears them for being able to easily out her if she’s not careful.
Rain's answer immediately made this a favorite page. But I'm sure we all felt that way at the idea of wearing a cute costume. I'm sure we all had that halloween memory where we see a costume that we utterly loved, but can't wear because it wasn't "okay". Sometimes it really did take all the fun out of halloween. And to look at the costumes for boys, I do agree that men glorify masks and really enjoy the blood. where as girls want to feel like stars in a pop princess kind of way. Though i can admit that a lot of "showy" girl costumes tend to be a bit out therem, at least most costumes aren't ment to make girls look like hookers. Though who would want to hide a pretty face beneath a mask.
Another reason why its awesome is Gavin's awesomeness. He's beginning to learn how to speak to Rain and put her in a situation that makes her feel confident in how she looks. I mean, how great is it a boy can encourage someone to play dress up and have fun with it. But I guess I point it out becasue its very nice to see the primary cast getting on the same page with Rain and her journey into transition. I mean, halloween is a time where we can take off our own masks to show the world for who we are. Makes it a truly magical holiday in a way.
The only time I dressed up for Halloween as a kid (I'm French so we don't celebrate it) I dressed up as Babar. I don't think I would ever have wanted to be a princess or anything like that... I would have loved dressing up as a pirate though.
I don't blame Gavin for this he was just trying to help. I hope that Rain does get a cute costume she would probably manage to pull it off and look good as well, and i love Maria's face in the last panel it's like" I get to see the girl that i like in something cute yeah". The party is going to be very interesting.
