(Don't read into that metaphor, it is just a metaphor)
Seriously, though, this page shows Gavin's struggle to let Robert and Devon in on what's going on without letting Robert and Devon in on what's going on. Ouch. Clearly, they're convinced of a few not-entirely correct notions in the realm of sexuality (I especially love Robert's quip in the last panel), and Gavin's trying to convince them of what (he believes) is actually going on.
Still, he's being kind of cruel to Drew. We, the readers, know that Drew has a "feeling" for Kylie (or, at the very least, has expressed that he has such a feeling aloud). We've also gotten to see a brief bit of Drew hitting on Rain; which, coupled with his word-of-author description, it's safe to say that he's felt attracted to quite a few girls in the past. I don't think he's "just straight and being stupid" or "gay and horribly in denial"; neither fit what we've seen of him so far. Also, I think labeling him "bisexual" would be jumping the gun (besides, Randy has already claimed that trait). To me, Drew's attraction to Kylie mirrors Rudy's attraction to Rain - each one has only felt attracted to members of one group in the past, but now suddenly feels attracted to a member of a different group. Devon brings up a perfectly valid point - if who someone likes determines who they are, as was vital to Gavin's previous trichotomy, then wouldn't that make Rudy straight, or at least bisexual?
And one more thing about Gavin's panel 3 rant: there's something remarkably "Marian" about it. Maybe it's the pose, the subject, or his way of speaking, but I can much more easily imagine Maria attached to that preach-fest than Gavin. Then again, maybe we're just seeing a side of Gavin that hasn't really been threshed-out yet, and maybe this is meant to establish new character details.
Of course, as usual, I'm interested to see where this chapter goes. I'd love to see Drew dealing with his feelings a bit more, and I imagine we'll get to see how the other students react to Maria's recent public coming-out, which I'm looking forward to.
2. That still gives us the same issue. Blankity blank pointless labels. (See point one.) The more we try to pre-define everything about the not-always-consistant-humans, the more conflict it causes. See the people above in the comic.
Labels are a necessary evil. Without definitions, nobody would ever know what anyone else was talking about. There are always exceptions to every rule but if I tell someone that I'm bisexual, heterosexual, or homosexual they will know whether or not they stand a chance with me (except that they really don't because I'm happily married). Of course, if I tell someone I'm pansexual they usually think I have a kitchenware fetish or am attracted to satyrs, lol! Which is why I call my bisexual.
