Wardrobe... malfunctioning

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 1, 2013, 6:54 PM
Thankfully, I'm not referring to myself.  Not this time anyway (although my wardrobe certainly does need work).

No, I'm actually referring to Rain.  Lately, I feel like my character designs come off pretty blah.  I should say that I like Rain's clothing choices generally.  But I base most of what she wears on things I own (or wish I owned).  I mean, she's based on me in a lot of ways, so it's just easier to have her like the same types of clothes.  Everyone else, though - just blah.  One could argue that slapping every other character in a t-shirt and jeans (or the occasional hoodie, woo) is just making things easier for myself.  But I feel like it just looks lazy.  I was drawing a page last night that featured most of the main characters, and I started getting bored because everyone essentially wears the same thing but with different colors.  And while this comic isn't really intended to be an artistic masterpiece, if it's boring for me to draw, I worry that it's boring for everyone else to look at.

I want to fix this.  And the solution sounds easy enough.  "Well, Lynn, why don't you just give them nicer clothes?"  Excellent point as that may be, I just don't have eye for fashion.  Except, I guess, MY fashion.  Like, I know what I like (hence, I know what Rain likes [hence, she has the best outfits 90% of the time]).  But I feel like I have a real hard time with Gavin and Maria and Rudy and Chanel and Kylie (boy presentation AND girl presentation).  And this is, for the record, a large part of why the main cast goes to a private school and wears uniforms. -_-

So this is going to sound potentially weird, but bear with me.  If you've ever wanted to help me with anything, and have any ideas for things the other kids besides Rain can be wearing, by all means, this would help me out a lot.  If you want to draw something, or post links, or even just describe it (in detail, please), your input would be most welcome.  Plus, if you help me with this, and your concept ends up getting used, I will certainly credit you for helping.  But remember I'm only really concerned with Gavin, Maria, Rudy, Chanel and Kylie (and maybe Emily).  I'm not worried as much about Rain, Fara (or any of the adults, for that matter), nor am I concerned as much with the other less important classmates.  Just the main kids.

Thank you in advance, and have a wonderful day.  ^_^

who cares if you're being lazy with clothing? i hardly notice any changes in clothing anyway (unless of course it's part of the story)

I care. And being the creator, I'm kinda the only one that HAS to care in order for something to be changed. ^_^

Well I'm not exactly a fashion "Expert" persay, but I do have the sense to point out any "miscues" in some fashions.. guys really don't exactly have too much more they can wear versus girls. Shirts wise they can be button up, polo, hoody, zip-up sweatshirts, t-shirts.. Not exactly anything really "exclusive" persay...
As for the girls.. ah I really can't say much on that, i'm not a girl.. so I can only really comment on colors versus what type of clothing, though I do manage to give my own sister tips on matching colors... other than that, I cant say much else
On another note, since Aiken knows about Ryan/Rain... and arguably's kinda ticked and being a complete jerk about it, any chance the sister's going to come around anytime soon?

In regards to Rudy's outfits, you usually just have him in bright colored t-shirts. Is that because you don't know what else to do with him?

Idk, I think casual plaid button down shirts and cargo pants would work for Rudy.

I definitely want Rain to dress in Lolita or Fairy Kei someday.

Also cargo pants for anyone you want to stick them on. They're fun to draw.

Maybe polos for the guys occasionally with a few horizontal stripes across the chest, or button ups with patterns like plaid, pinstripes...?
I'm not as good at female fashions, maybe switch from t-shirts to tank tops occasionally? Button-ups with puffy sleeves, boat-necks, peasant tops?
Though logos are tougher to draw, most of the t-shirts I have have logos or writing of some sort, the ones that are plain are either coloured or I've put designs or writing on them.

Ok, got two suggestions for you;
1: Lookbook.nu has a lot of different outfits that can inspire you, although it may be slightly hipster-y.
2: There are lots of great fashion blogs on tumblr.com that can be helpful. One of my favourites are dyemelikeasunset - she's also known as tyshea here on dA. She's not ONLY fashion, but she gives great advice and has a great taste. She recently posted a list of the fashion blogs that she follows, maybe you'll find something you can use amongst them! Here's a link to the list: [link]
I don't know if any of this will help, but check it out ;)
